‘Tis the season and the festive events are starting to fill our calendars. But what if you’ve been charged with organising a kids party for Christmas? Adults are easy but how do you plan a cheap Christmas party for kids? In today’s blog, we’ll give you some tips and ideas for bringing the ho-ho-holidays to little ones without needing to spend tonnes.
Affordable kids Christmas party tips
- Host the party at home or in a local park instead of paying over the odds for a full party venue.
- Look around the house, you probably have some items you can repurpose into decorations like colourful paper for chains and snowflakes.
- Make decorating interactive by inviting your young guests to create Santa hats or decorate pine cones with paint or glitter.
- Create a drink experience by making your own hot chocolate pick and mix. Keep warm cocoa toasty in a slow cooker and let the kids choose what to put in it like marshmallows, cinnamon sticks or whipped cream.
- Elevate their selfie game and provide props like festive hats, glasses, baubles and more. These are very affordable at places like Poundland.
- Keep the guest list limited to keep the costs down.
- Create your own snacks at home such as Christmas Cracker Candy, Peanut Brittle, Air-fryer Stuffing Sausage Rolls, Sweet Chilli-glazed Pigs in Blankets or Brie and Cranberry Bites.
With these bases covered, you’ll want to move on to the main event - games and entertainment.
What do you do at a kids Christmas party?
The activities you do will make or break your affordable Christmas party for kids. Here are a few of our favourites:
Pass the Parcel
Get a few little trinket gifts suitable for the ages of the children attending and wrap each gift inside one layer of wrapping paper - starting at the centre and adding a layer with each gift to make a ball or box. Then, on party day, have all the kids sit in a circle and put on some festive music. Tell them to hand the gift from one to another, and when the music stops, that child may tear off one layer of paper to take their prize. (You’ll want to keep an eye out for when to stop the music so all the kids get a present.)
Santa’s Stack
Grab some empty boxes and wrap them to look like gifts. Have teams of kids or individual children compete for the fastest time to create the highest stack. But be warned! They can’t let it topple over or they get no points. This is great for expending excess energy and getting all ages involved. Award a little treat or prize for the winners and something for everyone who played.
Candy Cane Hunt
Have the kids search for hidden candy canes you’ve stashed about. Invite them to put all the ones they’ve found on the Christmas tree and claim a little prize for playing. It’s good for problem-solving and will get them thinking… and it’s a fun way for them to help decorate for the holidays.
