Attending Disneyland is a must for a lot of families, but it’s not something that you’ll want to commit to year after year. That’s why having a DIY Mickey's not so scary Halloween party at home can be an affordable option that still celebrates the magic of the autumn season and adds a bit of Disney pixie dust to any Halloween kids party.

Bring Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party into your home

If you can’t make it to one of the Disney parks, you can recreate that experience and bring Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party into your home. Ideally, you’ll want the help of a few willing parents to play the part of various characters within your home. This will really help your kids feel like they’re there and bring the magic of these films to life.

Theme rooms

For each room in your home (that you are okay for kids to be in), create a unique spooky adaptation of a Disney film or character. We love this adorable Mickey ghost setup. Or you could use some cardboard cutouts or props to achieve the PhotoPass Magic Shots you get at the park. Many of the classic Disney villains lend themselves well to themed rooms like the Evil Queen from Snow White or Maleficent. Make it even more fun by having the hero of their story; a parent dressed up as Sleeping Beauty, for example, rescue your trapped kids from their clutches. Having distinct rooms will make them feel like they are travelling around the park at Disneyland.

Costume time

You could have the kids come dressed as their favourite character and then decorate some Mickey or Minnie ears to match their costume while at the party. Getting ears at the park is one of the most cherished souvenirs and you’ll want to provide this memory for your kids. Get mouse ear headbands and fabric scraps, ribbons, fake flowers, jewels and more. If you know what characters the children will be dressed as, you can plan to have matching supplies to hand. You’ll want to help them with hot glueing these pieces together to make their own custom headwear!

Entertainment

And lastly, let’s not forget the music. For each of the themed rooms, you might want to play the soundtrack from that movie. That’s an easy way to mimic the soundscapes of Mickey's not so scary Halloween party at home. However, for the main areas, a simple mix of kids party songs everybody will love is probably best. This increases the excitement in the themed rooms by creating a distinct mood change.

What to serve at Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party

We love the idea of healthy foods with a Halloween twist. Try setting out fully peeled and whole oranges with little celery stems to look like pumpkins. Or get out the food dye and make the caramel for candied apples a deep, spooky black; like the poisoned apple in Snow White. Serve orange and blackcurrant squash and decorate the straws with little black paper cutouts with Mickey ears, spiders, skulls and other little symbols. Make little Mickey or Minnie witch hat deserts by cutting a pear into a cone shape and placing it atop a digestive biscuit, coating it generously in melted chocolate and; just before it’s cooled, adding 3/4ths of a chocolate button to each side for mouse ears. (Pop a little cake bow decoration on it to make the Minnie variant.)
